Material requirements

Build a material & finish schedule

A material and finish schedule connects the appearance and base material to the role of each component.

Project guide6 practical considerations

Separate material from surface finish

Metal grade or alloy and surface treatment are different parts of the brief. Record both wherever they have been specified, along with the material form and thickness.

Explain the installation setting

Identify the environment and the relevant exposure information. Include the project specification that defines material or coating requirements for that setting.

Use a clear appearance reference

Where appearance matters, provide an agreed sample, colour reference or finish description. Identify which faces and edges will be visible after installation.

Record adjoining materials

A metal component often meets masonry, timber, glazing, coatings or other metals. Share the relevant connection and separation details from the project specification.

Consider handling and installation

If finished surfaces need protection during handling or installation, include the specified requirements. Explain any access or fixing arrangement that affects the finished detail.

Keep the schedule linked to the drawings

Use matching item references across material schedules, finish notes and drawings. When a requirement changes, update the relevant references together so the enquiry has one clear starting point.

Use the relevant project specification and current drawings as your reference point. This guide helps organise an enquiry; it does not replace the design requirements for your project.
